Adding Value To Change

So I would regard myself as one of the lucky ones. At the young age of 19 and through pure fluke, I stumbled upon the career I knew I wanted to do for the ‘rest of my life’. It was to create and deliver magical and inspiring event experiences. Every morning I would wake up with excitement to go to work. My dream career found me living in the city of DREAMS – NYC, where I got to work with incredible companies and travel the world doing what some referred to as ‘work’ but I could only describe as ‘enriched experiences’. After seven years there, I moved to London to further my career growth and expand my experiences.

Unwanted Change

However something happened 21 years after that original epiphany of finding my dream career. I fell out of love with what I was doing! This was very perplexing for me, as nothing had really changed in my life so why had I come to this place of unhappiness, un-fulfillment, confusion and I’ll be honest massive stress! The later was having a huge affect on my life in general and ultimately resulted in an unplanned visit to A&E and multiple ECG tests! This was when I knew something had to change. But what???

Being an independent and self-sufficient woman, I thought the only person to come up with a solution was me! That solution was to stop doing what I was doing (well the doctor also hinted at this too) and I took that quite literally. But in stopping what I was doing, meant I had to replace it with something else – BUT AGAIN WHAT?

Wasting time!

I spent the next 4-5 years drifting in the hopes of finding that ‘something’ and not surprisingly – I DIDN’T FIND IT! However I did meet someone who helped me get clarity on who I was and what I was looking for in life! Again, sounds quite simple and something I thought I was already aware of – WRONG! I was who I became through the journey I’d been on with many different companies and bosses, with many different values and drivers, each important to them and their journey of success however they didn’t fit with mine.

Getting clarity

By getting reacquainted with my values; what made me tick; what motivated me and lets be honest, what I was down right good at (a little modestly put aside there), I discovered what I’d been missing all these years and that was ‘ADDING VALUE’! Yes, I wasn’t adding any true purpose or value to anyone’s lives that would ultimately make a life changing difference. Once I knew that, I could see possibilities that were there all along, I was just too blinded by the past and its restrictions to see the ‘true me’ and what I could do.

Today, I am honoring my values and making a difference to other peoples lives by helping them achieve what I know they can achieve by being true to themselves.

So if you are currently feeling a little lost, unhappy or un-fulfilled with your career, invest a little time in yourself and do these simple steps:

  • Get Clear – Getting clear on your core values is an invaluable process and one which will reward every decision you make whether relating to your personal life or career. Values are who you are, not who you think you should be in order to fit in. They are the things you believe are important in the way you work and live. If we don’t know what’s important to us, we spend a lot of time wandering and wondering what we should be doing.
  • Honor Your Values – Once you’re clear on your values, take each one in turn and ask yourself - ‘Am I living in congruent with my values?’ Use recent experiences to sense check this. When actions and values are aligned, life feels content, in harmony with your purpose; you have peace of mind, even in challenging times. If there’s an area in your life which you’re unhappy with, ask yourself – ‘Am I truly honoring my values here?’
  • If you don’t take control of your life, someone else will – If after the last point you need to make some changes in your life to be realigned with what’s important to you, now is the time to do it. And if you can’t do it alone, find someone that can help you move forward to a happier and more content future.

Redundancy Crossroads

Finding My Purpose

Making a Change in the Change!

Guest Blogger, Pat Duckworth shares her career change from Civil Servant to Cognitive Hypnotherapist and Award Winning Author.

"It is Monday morning and I am sitting in my home office writing this blog before I have a Skype session with a client followed by a face-to-face cognitive hypnotherapy session later this afternoon. The sun is shining through the window and I am looking forward to my day.

Rewind 6 years and I would have been at my desk in Central London working as a Senior Civil Servant for a big Government Department. I was working for a boss who was a bully and did not appreciate the work I was doing. I had been working in the Civil Service for over 30 years, most of which had been happy and productive, but now I was 54 and I wanted to do something for me, something that would use all of my talents.

I had been interested in Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) for many years, so I enrolled to do a 10 month weekend course to learn NLP and Cognitive Hypnotherapy. My idea was to qualify and set up as a therapist while still working. However, an opportunity suddenly arose to take early retirement and I jumped at it. Then the fears started. What did I know about starting a business? I knew nothing about bookkeeping or setting up a website or writing advertising copy. What I did know was that I loved learning and I had acquired many skills over the years so what was stopping me from learning these new skills? Nothing!

My first step was to join a local networking group who met every Thursday. That helped me to build contacts with local business people and to learn from their experience. I was also able to practice my ‘elevator pitch’ and present my business in a supportive environment. I also shared knowledge and experience with the other members of the cognitive hypnotherapy course through an online forum.

I enrolled for whatever free or cheap business seminars were relevant to my business. These included the HMRC workshops on tax issues which were very helpful. Webinars can be a great way of picking up tips and advice.

More recently I have become part of a Mastermind group. Mastermind groups generally comprise 4-6 people who are seeking to grow their business and have a variety or skills and experience. My group meets over Skype on alternate months and in person the other months. It provides me with new perspectives on my business and I benefit from the other members’ skills.

In 5 years I have set up my business locally, started a weekly clinic in Harley Street, written three books, delivered numerous courses and workshops and worked with clients in Toronto, Los Angeles and Cyprus.

Hot Women Cool SolutionsThe benefits for me in making the change 5 years ago are numerous. I have a mixture of activities every day and I love everything that I do! Running my own business satisfies my values and uses all of my strengths. I love learning and sharing. Helping clients to overcome their problems and lead a fuller life is very important to me. Working as a sole practitioner could be lonely but I deal with that through networking and having great, supportive contacts. 

I have also used coaches at different stages of my new career and this has been invaluable. I was coached through the process of writing my book as a way of branding and promoting my business and that has been very successful.

Procrastination, the damaging effects

procastinazioneIt’s taken me a very long time to write this blog, why? Well believe it or not, I suffer from what’s known as chronic ‘Procrastination’! A terrible infliction, which I know some of you, will empathise with as fellow suffers. Procrastination, is to put off intentionally and habitually the completion of a task or something that should be done.

I can’t tell you the amount of endless research I’ve done on the subject (all part of the procrastination process I might add) and could still be doing had I not done one little thing!

FACED MY FEAR!

Yes, I was fearful of what the outcome would be – how mad is that, since I hadn’t written one line, never mind a full blog or shared it with anyone! Fear is one of the most common symptoms of procrastination. The ‘fear of success (or failure), the fear of the ‘what if’s’.

What if my blog sucks?
What if no-one reads it?
What if, what if, what if.

Well surprise surprise, they all came true as I hadn’t written anything, so no-one read it and no-one gave their opinion on it!

Now this is where you’re expecting me to tell you the 10 most important steps on how to overcome procrastination, well I’m sorry to disappoint. There are hundreds of well-written blogs and websites out there, which don’t need to be re-written by me. My message is quite simple – ACT:

ACCOUNTABILITY: Count up all the hours and days you’ve spent procrastinating over one action/task and calculate how much that has cost your business.
CLEAR: Get clear (and focused) on why this one action/task is important to your business. What are the results of not getting it done? Are these answers detrimental to your business plan or goals?
THING: Then do the ‘ONE THING’ that by doing it; everything else will be easier or unnecessary!

For me it was as simple as writing the first line, that ACTion, lead to this blog. The intangible result is the feeling of being in control, feeling motivated, energized, purposeful, calm and productive. Remind me again what I was fearful of?
